SPUD

I took this photo a year and a half ago but it seems relevant today. Spud is about to open an exhibition show at a gallery in Toronto. It will be about censorship and graffiti culture. It should be entertaining - Spud is ubiquitous around Toronto with these examples being one of the boring and annoying works, but he also has many caricatures of the current Mayor who has been on an unbridled rampage against graffiti and graphic art.

Very timely - I just read about the show in the paper this morning!

I always thought a spud was a potato.

Sounds like interesting times up there ! Do you (or does Spud) distinguish between graffiti and graphic art? Obviously the mayor does not. (I'm not sure I know the difference, but I probably should.)

Sallie - you have no idea how interesting!!! (and frustrating)
I think the lines are being blurred between graffiti and graphic art. for me the difference is that graffiti is illegal, and I think that is the point for artists like Spud.

I have seen his name around!
I'll have to look up this showing, it might be neat to see what else (besides his name) he came up with.

looks like the mayor needs to work harder.:p

So what do the initials 'DMC' stand for?

For mine, graffiti is tagging, with no artisitic endeavour. Wilful destruction. Street Art has an artisitc merit generally acknowledged.

I don't know what DMC stands for, but the two seem to often be together.

I admire the street art (even if I don't understand it) but tagging is a whole other issue.
And may I add that Street Art is unfortunately not acknowledged by Mayor Ford. But he lives in his own limited world.

Spud's work in this setting looks a bit more like vandalism. I don't really see anything too creative about writing his name over and over.

I have to laugh at Andy's comment, yeah spud for potato!

I love wall murals as oppose to graffiti.

Intersting discussion. I love street art. For sure tagging graffiti is enoying.

I love street art. We don't see/have a lot of them here.

I've never seen it before. But I guess I try to ignore the graffiti.
