New World by Bas Degroot
a brick mosaic on the wall of Holy Trinity Church in downtown Welland. It is meant to depict the immigrant experience to the new world. Bas Degroot was a Dutch multi media artist, born in Gorinchem and died in 2001 in Port Colborne. This mural was created in 1989.
When I read the name Bas Degroot I immediately thought "this must be somebody from Holland!". (i'm originally from Holland as well)
What a beautiful mural, i like the colors very much. And in your first photo I didn't notice that it was made out of bricks, that must have been some work, impressive! Thanks for sharing.
I like all the detail I can see in the first photo. From a distance, looks like an old world painting.
For some reason I got the feeling that Bas Degroot has a hidden message in the mural. I think it was the white doves that did it. They represent peace and perhaps Das was looking for it found it here.
How very beautiful and creative! So much patience must have been involved to place those bricks so effectively! Especially love the first image capturing the feel of the scene!
To create a photo by the placement of the bricks is amazing! What a beautifully executed scene - I agree that the doves probably represent the peace that was found in the new world. Great capture!
Very special such a brickmural, great photo.
Fabulous! I think a trip to Welland should be on my to- do list.
This is particularly impressive given it was created more than 20 years ago. Kind of cutting edge for street art, wouldn't you say? I agree with Spare Parts, but am reminded of old pen and ink drawings. What a great commission for a church. Thanks for participating again in this week's Monday Mural.
Immigrants being chased by seagulls (and pigeons, maybe?). Welcome to Canada! ;)
