reenactors

Red uniforms were worn so that 'friend or foe' could be easily identified with the dense smoke from the muskets and cannon fire.

The drums were an important part of the battlefield communications systems with various drum rolls signaling the different commands from officers to the troops.

Love reinactments. The participants are walking encyclopedias (maybe I should say Wikipedias)about their subject.

I used to work with a re-enactor. She was always taking time off to travel all over. I forget what she did exactly, but I believe it was the Civil War. And she had to make her own 'uniform' which she said was definitely not comfortable to wear!

I always wondered why they wore red.

Very cool shots. Every year They do a Civil War re-enactment called Shades of Blue and Gray in central IL near my daughter. It's quite a show.

Interesting -- those people really get into the spirit -- we've stumbled on a reenactment a couple of times.

The drummer boys costume is very ornate, I do like those old uniforms. We have numerous reenactors here, the most popular is the Civil War Roundheads versus Royalists battles and the occasional siege.

What an original post for the letter R! Making the photo of the Civil War reenactors sepia toned really makes it look like a period photo. And interesting about the red uniforms, I didn't know that! Back then it was all about wanting to be seen and easily identified, now it's all about camouflage.

We have one here every year...I will definitely make it a priority to go. I am currently reading a book - Blue Asylum - about a woman during the Civil War who is institutionalized...it is really very good. However, books on the Civil War are among my favorite reads.
