This Zellers department store is one that is slated
to become a US based Target store in 2012
when it will cease to be "truly Canadian" for good
another sad loss that may not actually be missed.
which is even sadder

We need a law like that in The States!
Is there anything "truly Canadian" anymore? :)
I didn't hear that! Goodness, is nothing sacred anymore? lol

Sad that something truly Canadian will be gone forever.
The logo that states it's the law is something perhaps we need here in the States.
sad, and I say that as an American.

I thought that Zelers & HBC were already foreign owned anyway. It will be sad though!
Very nice!
Zing is it for me. Hope you can visit and see. Have a nice day!
Glad you captured your sign, particularly for historical purposes. I feel for you losing "truly Canadian." There's hardly anything left here that is "made in the USA." I like Target but they certainly don't offer the lowest prices.
I wonder when we're going to have a Target store here.:p
@ Lindy: and the prices will still be higher in Canada than 60 miles down the highway in NY.
A bright and easy to see sign, whatever the story :-)
Is there a going-away sale or not?
I, for one, won't really miss Zellers.
Neat sign, though - many of the stores don't carry that old 'lowest price is the law' mantra.
The Zellers in Ajax is going to be one of first conversions. To EG Wow's comment... we still have Canadian Tire, Labatt Breweries, Molson and Moosehead.
Sad to lose an icon.

There seems to be some ambivalence regarding Zeller's demise! But even so, anything that is part of a country's identity, once gone, somehow chips away at the enchantment of identity differences!
It's sad when local businesses are replaced by global "brand" stores. Contributes to the loss of the character of a place, not to mention the economic disadvantages tot eh local communities...
When we're on roadtrips, if we don't get away from the freeways, every city mall is just the same as every other. But most people sadly (as you say) think that is fine. At least -- if it can't be local -- it's Target and not the dreaded Walmart. (IMHO)
Seems to be a huge pot of melt. Nothing has single structure, it seems. Good post for Z.
I haven't been to Zellers and they are going to close? Not nice!

I always liked Target when I was in the States. Not knowing what Zellers is like, I can't form a good opinion on it.
It's the LAW? WOW! Well, if it's ANY consolation....at least it's a TARGET coming in and not a WAL-MART!
I may be an American, but I hate seeing our companies going in and running out local enterprises. It is so sad. We lose so much when they leave. It is all for the dollar and “service” is no longer existence. genie
I hate it when native businesses go away. We had a chain called 'Clover' year ago that was pretty great. I like Target, but it won't be the same.
I've never been inside a Zellers. Maybe I'll have to check it out before it's gone. I have to admit, I like Target though.
Our Macy's in downtown LA has closed a few years ago and has been renovated for the rise of a new Target!
I don't like when every town looks like the next because we all have the same mega stores or chains. I prefer seeing something unique to a region...so it is sad.
it is always sad when the icons go away but a great post to finish off the round: http://jobryantnz.wordpress.com/2012/01/15/z-is-for-zinke/
