Hutt Bridge

A rather plain bridge named for an extraordinary man. William Hutt was a great Canadian thespian who was one of the original Stratford Theatre Company members (he retired in 2005). This bridge on Waterloo St was renamed in his honour in 2000, 7 years before his death at 85. The bridge crosses the Avon River and is close to where he lived for many years.

Monday Mural

along the wall of the buildings at Pier 8, which is an end point of the Waterfront Trail, are a collection of murals designed by various school children in Hamilton. This is a small sampling that are dated 2007 and have held up rather well.

I particularly like the addition of the 'tagging' on the lower right.

Don't you love the size of this fish relative to the buildings on land? The play on the Waterfront Trust's motto of 'connecting you to the water's edge' is also a nice touch.

update: the crackhouse and den of thieves motel will be torn down with a new complex of housing and retail and possibly a new transit station built in its place.

for no other reason than I have always been attracted to this barn like building that sits among 

the strip malls and new condos on Plains Road. I did go here once. that's it. just the once.

The NS&T (Niagara, St Catharines & Toronto) trolley

It may seem hard to believe, but in the first half of the last century there was an interurban electric railway empire that covered much of the Niagara Peninsula. Here is a mural commemorating the trolley that brought passengers from Toronto to the Welland County Fair. 

By the 1930s the trolleys were in serious decline, partly due to the Depression, 

but also to the rise of the automobile (which has not abated)

My father used to be a driver on these trolleys before it was discontinued in 1960.

L is for Lady of the Lake

I am thinking I should have waited until the next round to do this alphabetical Burlington, when the sights were a bit more green and lush looking...


Anyway, Burlington is located on the northern shores of Lake Ontario and below, we have a view of the fountain that sits at the waterfront park. photographed last June, the statue had been recently put back in place after a thorough cleaning.

and for a bonus L, the Lady of the Lake fountain was donated by the Burlington Lions Club
