Monday Mural

three historical scenes
 painted by John Hood,
the one on the left is dedicated 'for my dad'
with the one on the right dedicated 'for my mom'
these depict scenes from the early days of Welland, specifically King St in 1911 above
and on the top photo Merritt Park from 1910
and the market from 1906
I have enhanced the photos to bring out the colours which have faded since these were painted in 1988

Great mural! I love ones like these that make people stop and look and think...

These scenes look so realistic that it makes me wonder if they are based on photographs. The people on the lawn look like they are out of a Seurat painting. You raise an interesting question about how to preserve older street art. Many of the murals here, especially those under freeways seem prone to water damage. I wonder if current paints resist fading and peeling. Once again, a lovely contribution to Monday Mural. Thank you for your continuing participation and support.

Theses murals remind of us of our past and how things came to be. It seems to be a trend in Ontario towns and villages to display historic murals about their past. Fading murals is one thing I also notice. It's a dishonour that they are not being maintained.

Very nice photos of the murals, and thanks for the explanations that go along with them. I always enjoy seeing what people are able to do with art on such a large scale! Hope you will visit my blog to see murals from a town that is famous for them!

Fantastic reminders.

They've survived the test of time well so far. The colors seem a little faded but at least the murals are intact. No fool has left his tag on them. Hopefully they will be well preserved.
