The Main Street Bridge in Galt has been covered with a wide variety of knitted fabric made by over 1500 volunteers, most local, but some from as far away as Australia and New Zealand..About 16,000 plastic zip ties hold thousands of knitted and crocheted afghans, scarves, socks, pot holders and hats to the concrete bridge. The installation will be up until Sept 27 when all the pieces will be laundered and donated.

What a cute idea - this bridge is so lovely dressed in such colourful 'clothes'!
Have a lovely Sunday:)
What a fabulous idea! So bright and colorful.
I didn't know about the Sunday bridges meme unril just now when I read your post! and my latest post from our roadtrip just happens to be about crossing the GW Bridge == so I just added it to the meme -- thanks to you!!
(Mine's definitely not as colorful as yours!)
Oh, I will have to go see this in person! Thanks for showing it. What a great idea to keep the bridge warm
What a fantastic project. Now, will they know at which setting to launder all these pieces?
wow, this is the most unique public art i've ever seen! love it!
What a huge project! Very colorful -hope they donate it to people need it to keep warm:) Thanks for sharing!
An interesting concept.
Very colourful.
Okay, so this is the second public knitting project I've seen... this week! Is this a new trend I should be aware of? Is there a cause behind this bridge project? Very different, VioletSky!
That gladdens my fibrefreak heart!!!!
A very colorful bridge - what a sight ;-)
It´s wonderful!
Greetings from Argentina

Sallie: I am so glad!

This is an art installation to celebrate the history of the textile industry in the area.
I have written more about this on my other blog, Violet Sky.
That's fun, but I might crash my car being too busy looking at the colours!
There were a few cars that slowed, or completely stopped, to have a look, which must have been annoying to those behind who just wanted to get home!
What a super idea. I just hope it doesn't rain.
Oh, it did rain last Wednesday! All day, and hard. but everything seemed to have dried out by the time i ws there on Thursday.
What a super post! I never get out that way so thanks for showing it. What does happen to all the pieces later?
as far as I know, most will be donated to people in need. some pieces will be stitched together to make more afghans. some will be auctioned off and the proceeds going back into the arts.
Wow! Amazing work of art! Very colourful;o)
