The XXX symbol is three St. Andrew’s Crosses in white on a black stripe on a red background.
St. Andrew was a fisherman who lived in the 1st Century AD and was said to have been crucified on an X-shaped cross. The Amsterdam XXX symbol dates back to the year 1505 when the city was a fisherman’s town, so the coat of arms was established as the symbol for the city itself and it also flew as a flag on all ships registered in Amsterdam.

Well that is an excellent and unique way to share the letter "X".
AS good choice for X and the commemoration of St. Andrew.
This and the last post were feasts for the eyes and the mind. Thanks. Also, nice photo blog. My first comments here.

I was interesting to learn the meaning of the XXX.
A unique X. Nice B&W photo of the bridge, looks very peaceful. The naming is a great way to celebrate the connection with Amsterdam.
I remember about St Andrew (Catholic school childhood), but didn't know about Amsterdam.
My grandchildren go to St. Andrews School in Delaware, but I never knew the story of St. Andrew. I am so happy to learn the history. Thanks so much for sharing the info. Genie

That's more than I knew about the city of Amsterdam. Thank you for the information.
I got a kick out of the enlarged sign - where it says "His Worship ... The Mayor". What an interesting way to address the mayor!
That's a clever X :)
