St Nicholas inside

It was Doors Open in Hamilton, giving an opportunity to visit St Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church. Built in the Serbo-Byzantine style, this gorgeous building has stood on this spot since 1974. Thirty years later, the frescoes that adorn the walls and ceiling were painted by Fr Jurewicz.

St Nicholas interior detail

It took him three years, of painstaking detailed painting, layer upon layer, that culminates in this rich tapestry of images of biblical stores, feasts of the church and the lives of Christ, the Virgin Mary and many, many saints.

Sylvia: it was hard to get everything in!

Carolyn: the colours are very bright and fresh.

ewok: oh, I was making myself dizzy trying to take it all in.

eileen: there was series along the walls explaining how they were made - starting with the darkest colours, then overlaying with lighter colours until the final layer of the gold halos.

Sandy: and that it was all done by one man is extraordinary!

JBar: and such dedication to take on such a huge project.

That is amazing how the Serbo-Byzantine style was used for the paintings on the walls...Fantastic. It looks like it was done in the Middle Ages. Thanks for sharing.
